Becoming a Firefighter2

162d Air National Guard Firefighter in gear

The Tucson Air National Guard Might Be Your Calling

There is a good chance that when you sit in an airliner at the Tucson International Airport (TUS) and see a fire truck drive by, it is from the Tucson Air National Guard (ANG). They are located at Morris ANG Base on the north side of the airport. The department is arguably one of the test-trained fire departments in Arizona, if not the nation.

All Air National Guard firefighters are EMTs trained to handle everything from structural fires to complex aircraft emergencies. What makes this team exceptional is the wealth of experience from part-time firemen from departments across Arizona, like Phoenix, Tucson, Golder Ranch, Drexel Heights, and Northwest.

If you are looking for a career path in our community, becoming a firefighter with the Tucson Air National Guard could be precisely what you’re looking for. Just ask MSgt Mike Reynolds, Assistant Fire Chief at the 162d Wing’s Fire Department, who has spent decades building service, teamwork, and excellence.

MSgt Reynolds’ journey began in 2001, right out of high school in Sierra Vista, when he joined the Air Force. After a 12-year military service break, he returned to serve with the Tucson ANG. He emphasizes that today’s firefighters are part of a tight-knit family where everyone is supported, trained, and empowered to succeed. “Firefighting is a brotherhood and sisterhood.”

Serve Your Community

From basic training to advanced fire school and opportunities for global deployment, ANG firefighters receive world-class training, tax-free pay while deployed, and access to noteworthy benefits, such as the Post-9/11 GI Bill, hazard pay, and varied retirement plans. Whether you’re a full-time or a part-time weekend warrior, there’s room to grow, serve, and be a part of something bigger. If you want a career serving your community and learn life-saving skills, consider joining the Tucson Air National Guard Fire Department

It might just be the best decision you’ve ever made.
