What is the impact of our Educational Scholarships?

This year, the Air Guardians proudly partnered with the 162d Top 3 Council to award five $1,000 educational scholarships to deserving 162d Fighter Wing Airmen. Applicants underwent a competitive written process, reviewed by a panel of top NCOs and an Air Guardian representative. A few months after the awards ceremony, one of our NCOs sat down with a scholarship recipient to learn how the support has impacted their education and goals. Their inspiring words are shared below.

Q1. What motivated you to apply for this scholarship opportunity?

I was motivated to apply for this scholarship primarily because I strive to have an undergraduate degree within the next couple of years and that requires a lot of extra money for me that I must work for. I want an undergraduate degree from the U of A so that I may commission through Air Force ROTC and I will do what is necessary to be able to afford this degree such as applying for scholarships any opportunities I receive or taking temporary orders here on base during my breaks from school.

Q2. Did the scholarship help with your overall financial needs?

Yes, the scholarship aided me to pay off any extra money that I owed at Pima Community College in my last semester so that I may transfer to the U of A this fall, full-time.

Q3. If you don’t mind sharing, what was your GPA after you finished the last semester, and how much closer are you to finishing your degree?

My GPA after completing last semester is 3.5. I have one more 3-credit course this summer away from graduating Pima CC with an associate and will be on my way transferring to the University of Arizona this fall.

Q4. What was your biggest take away from receiving the scholarship?

My biggest take away from receiving this scholarship is that I learned there are many opportunities within my reach, I just must seek them. With my time in school and the military, I’ve learned no one else will care about my career as much as myself. I want to continue to get after what I truly want in my career academically and through the military.

Q5. What advice would you give to someone applying for this scholarship in the future?

To someone who is applying for this scholarship in the future; If you truly want your education, put in all the work you can. Take those opportunities as they arise no matter the cost. You may surprise yourself in your capabilities and in your achievements. However, do not define yourself in the awards you gain or scholarships you earn, simply work hard for your passions and success will come.
